Trailer
Every film here is read in the same way. 20 readings, each one a question with two ends. A reading never marks a film. It places it, somewhere between one pole and the other. Some readings ask what a film is built to do. Others ask what it does to you. Together they make a film's signature, and the signature is how films that rhyme with each other are found.
Feature
Plot DNA holds 12 readings about what a film is built to do. They ask how a film handles time, who it says is right, what it means beneath the surface, how many stories it tells, how far it drifts from real life, and whether it closes. Emotion Topology holds 8 readings about what a film does to the viewer. They ask how much it presses on you, how long it lingers, where the light and dark sit, how it shifts your mind, how tense it makes your body, and what it lets go. Open any reading to see both of its ends, with a film at each. Then use it in a search: describe the feeling you want in your own words.
Making of
The 20 readings were chosen because they tell films apart, do not repeat one another, and can be said in plain words. Pace, humour, who directed a film and what it cost were left out on purpose. Every one of the 275 films is read on all 20 readings. A visitor sees the readings that stand out most on a film. An account opens the rest, and the sentence behind each. Every other film is read against the 5 calibration films and checked. The limit: the readings are a frame, not the whole of a film. They place a film and never judge it. Two careful viewers can place one film a little differently, which is why every reading comes with its reason. A reading is not a category. Two films can sit at the same place on one reading and differ in every other way, which is why a film has all of them and not one.
