The Frame

Shoplifters

2018 · Hirokazu Koreeda · Japan

A makeshift family scraping by on petty theft loves one another more truly than the blood families around them — until the law decides that what they built was never a family at all.

Before anything else

What it does to you

Koreeda lets you settle into the warmth — the meals, the fireworks heard through a gap in the roof, bodies asleep in a heap — and withholds every declaration, so affection lives in proximity rather than words. Then the slow reveal of what's being taken recasts all that comfort as something you were about to lose, and the unease arrives late and changes everything behind it. The ending re-isolates each person into their old solitude, and you feel that atomisation as a genuine bereavement.

Things to notice

Not a summary. What the film keeps returning to, so you can see it when it comes.

Breaking Bread

Shared meals are the primary ritual of chosen kinship — eating together is how this family constitutes itself, and the dissolution of the family is shown through the absence of these shared meals.

Almost

Physical nearness and withheld declaration define the film's emotional register — the relationships are constituted through proximity, shared glance, and the unspoken rather than through any explicit avowal of love.

Comings & Goings

The film is structured around a series of quiet arrivals into the family and forced departures from it — each act of leaving or being taken away is given narrative gravity as a rupture in the only social contract these characters trust.
