The Frame
Schindler's List
A war profiteer who came to Poland to get rich ends up spending everything he has to buy back lives, one name at a time, as an industry of murder runs at full speed around him.
Before anything else
What it does to you
Spielberg trusts the historical record to do the work, filming in handheld black and white so it plays as witness rather than drama, and the restraint makes it land harder. The horror comes not from monsters but from ordinary men taking coffee before they kill, which installs a recognition you cannot shake. He grants a genuine release at the end and then immediately qualifies it with everyone the list could not reach, so you leave purged but not emptied, carrying it for days.

Things to notice
Not a summary. What the film keeps returning to, so you can see it when it comes.
What's Shown, What's Hidden
The single candle that opens the film, the Sabbath flames, the extinguished light — illumination and its withdrawal structure the film's moral geography with deliberate recurrence.
The Look That Says Everything
Schindler's look through the window at the girl in the red coat during the liquidation is the film's pivot — a sustained gaze that cannot intervene and cannot look away, carrying the entire moral transformation wordlessly.
Comings & Goings
The trains function as the film's recurring engine of fate — each departure is a potential annihilation, each arrival at Brünnlitz a reclaimed life — given sustained narrative and visual emphasis.
