The Frame
Gabbeh
A woven carpet tells the story of its own maker — a woman in love with a horseman she is never allowed to reach — until story, weaver, and colour become the same living thing.
Before anything else
What it does to you
Its slow, musical, saturated surface soothes the body even as its subject is a longing that was never allowed to happen. Colour is the argument, not the decoration — the reds and yellows and blues produce feeling directly, with no need for plot. What lingers is a diffuse ache that sits in the chest without breaking it, its images returning unbidden the way a folk song does.

Things to notice
Not a summary. What the film keeps returning to, so you can see it when it comes.
Almost
The horseman and Gabbeh are repeatedly proximate and structurally prevented from meeting; the film is architecturally built from the negative space between two people who never fully reach each other.
What's Shown, What's Hidden
Makhmalbaf uses saturated color contrast as a moral and emotional system — vivid pigment against dust, bright wool against bare earth — functioning as the film's dominant visual syntax.
Going Nowhere
The nomadic caravan moves continuously across the landscape throughout the film, and the movement never arrives — it is the condition of existence rather than a plot function, and removal would collapse the film's cosmology.

The Long Echo
A grower: it stays long, it asks the big questions, it hides its layers. It will not mean the same thing twice.
This one is folded until you have seen it
The Long Echo talks about what a second and third viewing open up, and it cannot do that without going past the ending. It stays closed until you say the word.

Questions people ask
- Is there a plot to follow?
- Loosely — a woman, a horseman, an old couple by a stream — but the film flows by the logic of a story telling itself. Let the colour and the song carry you rather than tracking events.
- Why is it so colourful?
- Because colour is how it feels. Makhmalbaf treats vivid pigment as a language of desire and memory, so the images move you before you can explain a thing.
